Gear Review: Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Wader

After logging 277 days in my Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Waders, it is safe to conclude that these waders are the best buy for the price. It is not typical to find a wader that is both highly breathable and durable enough to last through a season of angling abuse. The Orvis Silver Sonic Wader family is where breathability and durability meet.

By developing Sonicseam technology Orvis eliminated sewing seams together, which eliminated leaks at seams. The Orvis Silver Sonic Wader family uses seams that are “welded” together. The waders are also constructed with high density four-layer breathable nylon that is both abrasion and puncture resistant.

The Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Wader created a new standard in waders that are light weight and very breathable. Many of the top-rated waders in the market are very heavy in order to achieve durability. On warm days this can be very uncomfortable. The Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Waders are constructed with a durable light weight fabric that is very breathable and comfortable, even on the dog days of summer.

Let’s talk about some of the additional features offered. The Y-style padded suspenders are comfortable to wear all day long. The Handwarmer pocket is great for colder weather as well as additional storage, just beware it is not completely waterproof due “water-resistant” zippers as well as a drainage hole. The fabric gravel guards seem as durable than traditional neoprene gravel guards. There are many characteristics of the Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Waders that are accommodating to anglers, but the best feature is being dry at the end of the day.

Zippers and Tool Dock still hard at work with no issues after 277 hard fought days on the water.

I will admit that I was a little skeptical and had my doubts while “wadering up” the first time. I couldn’t imagine how a pair of waders that felt so comfortable and light weight would be durable enough to last (especially considering I am very hard on equipment). Besides being dry at the end of the day, the best part is the Silver Sonic Guide Wader is they are priced less than most of the competition. As an angler and guide, I’m confident in saying that I think the Orvis Silver Sonic Guide Wader is the best wader available at a price point of $425.
